Zakes Bantwini

Durban [South Africa]

Biography

Known as The Ghetto King, Zakes Bantwini, born Zakhele Madida, is one of South Africa’s most influential musical visionaries. Singer songwriter, producer, DJ, entrepreneur, and cultural advocate, he has spent over two decades shaping the sound and global perception of Afro House and African electronic music.

Emerging from KwaMashu in Durban, Zakes built his reputation on a distinctive fusion of traditional South African textures and contemporary electronic production. Tracks like Clap Your Hands, Juju, Imali, and the global anthem Osama have defined dancefloors across continents. The worldwide success of Osama propelled him onto international stages from Ibiza and London to Miami, New York, Bali, and Burning Man, cementing his global presence.

“African music belongs on the world stage. We are not catching up. We are leading.”

In a historic milestone, Zakes earned his first Grammy Award for Bayethe, a collaboration with Wouter Kellerman and Nomcebo Zikode. Beyond the accolade, he played a pivotal role in amplifying African representation at the Grammys, hosting leadership in South Africa and contributing to global conversations during Grammy Week at the Grammy Museum.

Founder of Mayonie Productions since 2004, Zakes has nurtured emerging talent while expanding into live events, artist management, and strategic brand partnerships with Mercedes Benz, Glenmorangie, and First National Bank. A UNICEF Ambassador and advocate for youth empowerment, he continues to merge artistry with impact.

Zakes Bantwini is more than a musician. He is a movement, driving African excellence into the global spotlight.
