festival101za | 11 June 2023

Psychedelic Trance, often referred to as Psytrance, is a genre of electronic music that has captivated countless souls with its mind-altering rhythms, hypnotic melodies, and transcendent energy. Originating in the vibrant and transformative 1990s, this genre has evolved and branched out into various subgenres, each with its distinct characteristics and influences. In this blog post, we delve into the origins of Psytrance and explore its mesmerizing subgenres, taking you on a journey through time and sound.

The Birth of Psychedelic Trance:

The roots of Psychedelic Trance can be traced back to the 1980s and the emerging electronic music scene in Goa, India. Influenced by the counterculture movement and the spirit of exploration, a group of visionary DJs and artists began fusing elements of electronic music, psychedelic rock, and traditional Indian instrumentation to create a unique sonic experience. The beaches of Goa became the epicenter of this movement, hosting full-moon parties and gatherings where the sound of Psytrance emerged.

Goa Trance:

Goa Trance, often considered the progenitor of Psytrance, embodied the spirit of the early psychedelic movement. It embraced long, hypnotic tracks with complex layers of synthesized sounds, echoing melodies, and trippy effects. The music aimed to induce a state of trance and spiritual awakening, drawing inspiration from Indian spirituality, Goa’s free-spirited atmosphere, and the mind-expanding experiences of the time.

Full-On Psytrance:

As Psytrance spread beyond the shores of Goa and gained popularity worldwide, the genre underwent significant transformations. Full-On Psytrance emerged as a high-energy and euphoric subgenre, characterized by its relentless basslines, uplifting melodies, and fast-paced rhythms. This subgenre took the essence of Goa Trance and injected it with a more intense and party-oriented vibe, making it a staple at festivals and energetic dance floors.

Twilight Psytrance

“Twilight” (also called “Night Full-On”) is the name for high energy Pstrance music that is a blend of hard non-cheesy Full-on and Darkpsy sounds. The music is suitable for both day and night, and even better for twilight hours. This contains the South African, Portuguese, and the original French 3D Vision sound. Technically, Twilight is a kind of “Dark Full-On”: it is characterized by a more aggressive bassline, a certain abundance of sound effects inspired by Darkpsy, as well as a melodious nature inherited from Full-On with a dark atmosphere. It became a recognizable style and term by the mid 2000’s and with the bpm’s between 145-150.

There is also another form of Twilight called “South African Twilight” which is more approaching to Full-On. This variant, which is actually the founding style of Twilight, which stands slightly apart from the Twilight stemming from other countries. Several S.A. labels and artists all embraced the style, including some artists from outside the country that routinely were on S.A compilations and team-ups. Therefore it’s often easier to call all of this Twilight Psytrance while still noting the differences between the different scenes and countries.

Progressive Psytrance:

In the late 1990s, a new wave of Psytrance known as Progressive Psytrance emerged, offering a more atmospheric and evolving sound. Characterized by its rolling basslines, intricate rhythms, and evolving structures, Progressive Psytrance aimed to create a seamless and immersive experience on the dance floor. It introduced elements of other genres like minimal techno, house, and ambient, blurring the boundaries of traditional Psytrance and inviting listeners into a hypnotic journey of sonic exploration.

Dark Psytrance:

While Goa Trance and Full-On Psytrance brought joy and euphoria to the dance floor, Dark Psytrance delved into the depths of the mind, exploring the shadowy realms of consciousness. Dark Psytrance is characterized by its aggressive and twisted soundscapes, eerie melodies, and heavy use of effects. It embraces a more ominous and experimental approach, inviting listeners to embark on a darker and introspective voyage.

Forest Psytrance:

Forest Psytrance, also known as “The Sound of the Forest,” draws inspiration from nature and the mystique of the wilderness. It embraces organic and earthy sounds, incorporating elements of tribal rhythms, shamanic chants, and enchanting atmospheres. Forest Psytrance evokes a sense of being in harmony with the natural world, with its layered textures, mystical melodies, and the pulsating energy of the forest.

From the sunny beaches of Goa to the farthest corners of the globe, Psychedelic Trance has taken root and evolved, giving birth to a diverse range of subgenres. Each subgenre brings its unique blend of sonic elements, influences,
