4# The World of Psytrance: Psy-Fi (Amsterdam)

festival101za | 4 October 2020

Today we take you on a trip to Holland , straight to the psychedelic lands of Psy-Fi , one of the most respected festivals today that represents Psytrance  in Leeuwarden , one of the European Capitals of Culture. The legendary Dutch festival has already hosted on its stage the greatest masters of the world scene such as Raja Ram , Astrix , Ace Ventura , Burn In Noise , Captain Hook , Tristan , Liquid Soul and many other big names.

Psy-Fi is more than an event, it is a class of respect for the environment, culture, art and music. A place where all religions, cultures and countries can connect freely and have unforgettable experiences governed by PLUR .

In 2013 the first edition of Psy-Fi was born in Stadspark in Groningen , the event took place from the 12th to the 15th of July and was described by many participants as “a meditative journey of 65 hours” . The first edition of the event was the starting point for it to make a name for itself in the Dutch region as well as  inside and outside Europe.

The following year the festival moved to its current home, the De Groene Ster recreation area , located east of Leeuwarden , Frisia’s main economic center . In 2018 the city received the European Union the title of European Capital of Culture .

The beauty and receptivity of the place makes the stay more pleasant during the festival days and reveals the importance of connection and respect for nature, shared in Leeuwarden .

What is Psy-Fi

Psy-Fi have so far hosted seven events,  the community consists of several stages with different styles of music and two campsites for it’s guests. On the “ Ilha Sagrada ” there are learning programs, lectures, workshops, healing areas, ceremonies and cinema during the festival.

The Mainstage (Main Stage) is next to the lake and is responsible for receiving the Psytrance legends . Freak Floor  is where the most intense genres are presented, this is where Psycore , Hi-tech , Forest , Experimental and Darkpsy roll out .

There is also a Chillout section for those looking to relax their mind and body. The 4TH Floor was released in 2017 with the aim of bringing the Techno  Psychedelic to the public and giving opportunities to mostly local artists.

The Psy-Fi also offers spaces for artists to present their work in Artistry Plaza and the new space, the Art Space , where are displayed live paintings, visionary art, projections and art sculptures.

Project leader Wiebe Kootstra describes Psy-Fi as “a weeklong community”. For him, the fact that so many people are interested in his event and travel far and wide to attend it, is something really very special to him.

Environmental Education

Besides offering plenty of art, culture and music to the public, the event also cares about the environment and the waste produced there during the event. Starting with the decoration that is reused every year.

No glasses or cans are allowed in the festival area, drinks are served in reusable glasses, made from recycled plastic.

At the entrance to the event they provide a portable ashtray so the crowd do not to throw cigarette butts on the floor. A garbage bag is also provided for each participant to collect their garbage and dispose of at the 200 garbage points in the festival area and at the campsites .

There is also the team The PsyClean Crew , composed of more than 60 people, who work collecting lost items and ensure that the area is always clean. According to the crew in 2017, the team collected 75,376 Kg and in 2018  54,775 Kg were collected. All paper waste was recycled in 2018 and in 2019 they also recycled all glass cans and bottles.

Another concern for the event is with the emission of CO2 in the atmosphere, which is why all generators are powered by Ssynfuel (renewable synthetic fuel), which is an exclusive fuel composed of vegetable oils and other renewable resources and which reduces emissions up to 89% carbon dioxide compared to normal diesel. There is also a water taxi powered by solar energy, to transport the public inside the festival.

The entire terrain is mapped by an ecologist who informs where the fauna and flora should be protected, in addition to a company that makes a complete analysis of the sound systems and their impact on nature and the neighborhood.

Adherents to Vegetarianism

Psy-Fi is an event that does not support the meat industry, so if you want to eat you need to take your own with you. In the event’s food court, they only serve organic and vegan products, which are produced in the community’s vegetable garden.

They also leave a list of suppliers for food professionals, so that everything is purchased directly by local suppliers. Another interesting point is that the dishes used there must be made of paper or wood and are accompanied by reusable cutlery.

This year the eighth edition of Psy-Fi would take place , but due to COVID-19 the event was postponed to August 2021 .

Learn more about the event through its official Facebook page here.
