oskido

Johannesburg [South Africa]

Biography

South African DJ, producer and entrepreneur Oskido, born Oscar Sibonginkosi Mdlongwa, is one of the defining figures in the country’s electronic and dance music history. With a career spanning more than three decades, he has played a central role in popularising Kwaito, shaping the development of Afro House, and helping create the foundations for the generations of South African dance music that followed.

Oskido’s journey began in the club scene after he stepped in to DJ at Razzmatazz when the scheduled DJ failed to arrive. What started as an unexpected opportunity developed into a career that would take him from Johannesburg clubs to dancefloors around the world. His early Mixmaster and Big Jam compilations helped establish his distinctive approach to mixing and production, while his work with Brothers of Peace produced influential releases including Zabalaza, which later reached international dancefloors through a remix by Louie Vega.

“Oskido’s legacy is rooted in connecting South African sounds with dancefloors around the world.”

As co founder of Kalawa Jazmee Records, Oskido has also played an important role behind the scenes, helping develop artists and groups including Mafikizolo, Bongo Maffin and Trompies. His influence extends beyond his own productions, with his label and A&R work contributing to the growth of South Africa’s dance music industry and providing a platform for emerging talent.

His own musical catalogue spans Kwaito, House and Afro House, with a production style shaped by South African rhythms and contemporary electronic music. Oskido’s work has helped connect local sounds with international audiences while remaining closely tied to the culture from which they emerged. Resident Advisor describes him as one of South Africa’s premier house and Kwaito club and radio DJs and producers.

Beyond his work as an artist, Oskido’s influence has continued through his role as a mentor, label head and entrepreneur. In 2026, he was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver for his contribution to South African music and for creating opportunities for young musicians.
