DJ Lag
Biography
South African DJ and producer DJ Lag, born Lwazi Asanda Gwala, is one of the pioneering forces behind Durban’s gqom sound. Emerging from Clermont, Durban, he began making music as a teenager before developing the raw, percussive style that would help take gqom from the city’s underground scene to dancefloors around the world.
Built around heavy percussion, sparse rhythms and deep bass pressure, DJ Lag’s music captures the energy of Durban while continually pushing the possibilities of the genre. His early tracks, including “Ice Drop”, “Umlilo” and “Khonkolo”, helped establish his sound internationally, while releases through labels including Goon Club Allstars, Hyperdub and Diplo’s Good Enuff introduced gqom to new audiences across Europe, Asia and the United States.
“Gqom is made for clubs, made for nightlife.”
DJ Lag’s international career took off with his 2016 debut tour, which included performances at Unsound Festival in Poland and Cake Shop in Seoul. Since then, he has appeared at major festivals and venues including Sonar Barcelona, MELT Festival, Afropunk, Dekmantel, Boiler Room Festival, Glastonbury and EDC Las Vegas, building a reputation for high impact sets rooted in the physical energy of gqom.
His debut album, Meeting with the King, arrived in 2022 and explored what he described as the next evolution of gqom, bringing the genre into conversation with amapiano, Afro House and Afro Tech. In 2024, he followed it with The Rebellion, further expanding his sound while remaining firmly connected to his Durban roots. His work has also reached a global audience through collaborations including “My Power” with Beyoncé, Tierra Whack, Busiswa, Yemi Alade, Moonchild Sanelly and Nija on The Lion King: The Gift.
More recently, DJ Lag has continued exploring the space between gqom and other contemporary African electronic sounds. His 2025 Southside Mixtape brought together gqom, 3 step, techno and electronic influences, while his ongoing international touring continues to take his sound far beyond the streets of Durban.
DJ Lag’s story is closely tied to the evolution of gqom itself. From experimenting with production as a young artist in Clermont to performing on some of the world’s biggest electronic music stages, he continues to push a distinctly South African sound forward without losing sight of where it began.
