Black Coffee
Biography
South African DJ, producer and entrepreneur Black Coffee, born Nkosinathi Maphumulo, has spent more than two decades developing a sound that has carried South African electronic music onto some of the world’s biggest stages. Rooted in house music and shaped by African musical traditions, his productions and DJ sets combine deep grooves, soulful melodies, atmospheric textures and distinctive percussion.
Black Coffee’s career began in the South African house scene before he established his own label, Soulistic Music, and developed a signature sound that blends traditional African influences with contemporary electronic music. His approach has helped bring a distinctly South African perspective to global dancefloors, with his music often described as Afro House and Afropolitan House.
“Music should divide barriers and unite us under this one universal language.”
His international profile grew through collaborations with artists including Alicia Keys, Drake, Usher, David Guetta, Diplo and Pharrell Williams. His sixth studio album, Subconsciously, brought together a wide range of collaborators while continuing his exploration of melody, emotion and electronic music beyond traditional genre boundaries. The album earned Black Coffee the 2022 GRAMMY Award for Best Dance/Electronic Music Album.
Beyond his recordings, Black Coffee has become a major presence on the international festival and club circuit, with performances and residencies spanning Europe, North America and beyond. His global career has included a residency at Hï Ibiza, performances at Coachella and a sold out headline performance at Madison Square Garden in New York in 2023.
While his career has taken him around the world, Black Coffee continues to use his platform to highlight African talent and the richness of South African music. His work represents a connection between local musical heritage and the wider electronic music community, with a sound that continues to evolve without losing its roots.
